THE SECRETS OF THE GREENWAYS: RIPOLL - OLOT ROUTE

The old train line, now a greenway trail, sets before you all the natural charms, rich heritage and history of the towns that will visit on Girona’s network of Greenways. On your journey, you will even discover some of the secrets kept over time, and the stories, legends, and events remembered by the townspeople that helped shape the landscape and forge the local character.

The wide gauge branch line started at Ripoll; it was built in 1890 to connect Barcelona with Sant Joan de les Abadesses and the Ogassa mines. From Sant Joan to Ogassa, passing by the Toralles loading station, a steam engine was used to make the ascent. The service had clear industrial and commercial aims: to get the coal from the Ogassa mines to the port of Barcelona.
It was finally closed down in 1985.

Today, the accessible route traced by the Iron and Coal Route, as this Greenway is called, is a stretch of 15km that provides an excellent opportunity to take in the landscape, as you will see when using this guide. To link up with the next Greenway, you cross the Bianya valley, a landscape both rich and surprising.
