From 1880, industrial development in Northern Catalonia was the driving force behind the construction of the famous network of narrow gauge railways in the counties of Girona. These tracks and their "small trains" enabled tons of goods and thousands of people to be moved around and supported economic growth in the area for nearly a century.
In the 1970s, the narrow gauge railways were shut down one after the other, mainly because of the growing popularity of cars. However, from the 1980s a new use was found for them and they were gradually transformed into "Greenways" and now the tracks are only for cyclists and walkers!
Today there are over 115 kilometres of Greenways, which, together with some linking stretches, trace a complete route of 136 kilometres between the towns of Ripoll and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. So, let's explore them and enjoy a unique landscape while discovering the region's culture, its abundant wildlife and vegetation and its fantastic architectural heritage.
We invite you to make this fascinating journey from the mountains down to the sea. So follow the train!
ALBUM 1/ THE IRON AND COAL ROUTE
This first album conjures up the old Iron and Coal Route, and covers 15 km of Greenways, from Ripoll to Ogassa, taking in Sant Joan de les Abadesses. This stretch follows the exact route taken at the turn of the 20th century by the trains serving the area's thriving coal industry.
Look at the maps and you'll find heritage treasures, nature in all its splendour and part of the history of the villages bordering the Greenway. Have a great time drawing and learning!
